where are the manners? 11-17-08 11:06pm EST
Does anyone else get totally frustrated when you go to a retail store and are dropping a good amount of money on food, diapers, etc., and the cashier never speaks to you???? The first time I realized people where this rude was at Kash and Karry while at FC. Coming from central Kentucky I was pretty used to everyone being overly kind.

Anyway, I thought of this today because of the super sweet lady at Dixie Cream donut. She always asks how I am, where my kids are(if they aren't with me), and sometimes surprises me by putting an extra donut in my bag. She says I am always smiling and happy(obviously I frequent the donut store too much). This compared to the cashier at Wal-mart on my Sunday grocery shopping trip. I spent over $150.00 and he never took the initiative to speak...so rude!

I work in retail and feel like if I am being paid an agreed amount of money to do my job, that I should go out of my way to be kind to others and show interest in them and appreciate that I have a job because of them.

Does anyone else get frustrated by this?
mrs_wormIt depends on my mood. Mostly, I don't want the cashier to carry on a complete conversation with me... I want them to do their job quickly and efficiently. I am, however, happy when a cashier says something to/about my children if they are with me.
cdillman23My mother-in-law made a comment at Lowe's one time when she was visiting. I tried to talk to the cashier and she just kind of moaned at me. I made my effort to be friendly but not everyone has that personality. I have had her wait on me several times and it is just her nature not to be very social. I am normally one to smile, talk with and joke with the cashier. On the other side of that, I also used to work a register. Some days when it is almost time to go home, you may not be as sociable as you were when the day started.
tu_madrewe had a cashier like that at walmart this past weekend. didn't say hi or anything. i remember my days as a cashier, i at least said hi to everyone, even if i didn't feel like talking.
ucnclmealYes, this frustrates me too. I worked in retail for 5 years in college, and I work in a service industry now. You get *so* much further with people if you smile and offer the usual pleasantries, "Hello!" "Thanks for shopping at..." "Come back and see us soon" rather than NOT talking or being polite at all. The people you interact with DO see the difference, it does affect where they take their business, and depending on who you are polite & helpful or rude and indifferent to, it can make a difference in your job.
pookyI think that people forget that they are being paid to assist the customer and make them feel good about the store they are working for.
mrs_poochiejust another reason for me to not shop at walmart . . . the cashiers at target all know me. :)
racheldeanWill we get to see you while we are there?
saricbradleyI think there are too many customers that are just as rude. (I will NOT talk on my cell phone when it is my turn in line!).
smiley_bethIs this Polly hosay who's mother-in-law is Ruby? If so, this is Beth Erickson and I used to worship at West Carrollton with your in-laws. I just wanted to stop in and say hello.
zanneI get more frustrated by the people (guys in particular) who let teh door slam in my face while I'm out with the 3 kids. Rude!!
smiley_bethYes I do the cakes myself. I am thinking about seeing if anyone would hire me to make specialty birthday cakes. I couldn't handle the stress of wedding cakes but I really am enjoying creating the kids' birthday cakes each year. So how old are your little ones now? I miss Ruby too. She is so sweet and we really made West Carrollton home.
pookyI'm going to pretend like mice CAN'T climb stairs. And I'm going to move out of my house if I learn that they can climb blankets. :)

sickies 11-07-08 09:35pm EST
I feel like Jonas's sickies are hear to stay. After all the medicine he has been on since Tuesday, he is getting worse. More wheezing and now throwing up drainage(which is probably a good thing). After a doctors visit and chest xrays this evening, he gets 7 more days of oral steroids, breathing treatments every 4-6 hours, and a ten day antibiotic. Luckily he loves the taste of medicine:)

I am disappointed by more of the oral antibiotic though, because he has been crazy the last few days. Last night when I put him in bed he was screaming and I went back in and he was running back and forth in the crib and got a slight black eye by hitting his face on the rails. Also while running in the crib he threw up twice:) Fun times!

Anyway, on the positive side of this, I got to spend about three hours in waiting rooms with just him today. It was nice to have some one on one time with him. We go back to the Dr. at 8am Monday.

Have a good weekend!
zanneShad has had to be on steroids a couple of times for wheezing and it was not fun. He was climbing the walls. I hope the week goes by quickly for you and this takes care of his illness!!
emilygrahampoor Jonas and you. If you need a break let me know and we can help.
mrs_wormdo you run a humidifier in his room at night??
split_rockHope you can get Jonas' sickies under control soon. It's hard for all of you.
mrs_wormI've felt MUCH better Thursday and today.

Thanks!
racheldeanI am so sorry to Jonas and you are having such a rough time. I sure hope and pray he is better soon. I admire you for finding the positive in waiting 3 hrs in waiting rooms!
gkbakerHope he gets better
trolleemI'm with Rachel...you are great at finding the positive! I appreciate you and your hard work.
mrs_poochieis he feeling better now?
cdillman23I hope he gets to feeling better soon!!!
pookyHow's Jonas feeling?
pooky(and how are YOU holding up?)
racheldeanOh, wow, I sure would, if you didn't mind. I think those are so nice. How is sweet little Jonas doing?

election day 11-04-08 10:17pm EST
Who else had long lines to vote today? My line probably wasn't long compared to others, but I had to wait about 2hrs and 15min. I went at 7am and waited outside for 30mins, but then had to leave to get to work. I came back at 10am thinking that was a nuetral time, where lines would be short. I was encouraged by the number of people with young children who waited in line over 2hrs. I was discouraged when an elderly man with a cane, was taken to the front of the line by a poll worker and then denied and sent back to wait, standing outside.

Basically I feel like I didn't get to work much today. with drive time to poll and back I missed about 3hrs of work. Then got a call from the sitter that Jonas's wheezing was getting worse(he has had problems a couple of days). He gets triggers that really agitate his asthma situation every month or two. He already does 2 breathing treatments a day, but after taking him in they had to up his dosage, up the number of times he does the treatments a day, and add on an oral steroid. The oral steroid made him hyper, which he typically is not. However, Isaac, who is always hyper, was energized by Jonas's behavior.

David worked until 1:30 am this morning working on graphics for todays election shows(he works at an abc affiliate). Anyway, he will be at work very late tonight until all is determined with the election.

hope everybody had a happy election day!
trolleemwow that is a long time to wait! i did early voting here and it only took 5 minutes. was there early voting in bg?
darleen21wow, you waited so long. My mom said she waited 1.5 hours. My husband and I went tonight after work, about 6:20 and walked right up, no line. We were expecting to wait for awhile.
saricbradleysorry you had to wait so long, we waited until Eric came home from work and walked in, no line and were out within 5 minutes. The girls thought the process was really neat.
trishieWe got to the polls and there were three empty booths, so it was quick for us. We even went right at noon!
carawatsonfranklinI went around 10:45 and only had to wait 10 or 15 min. Not bad at all. I hope Jonas' asthma settles down soon.
mrs_poochiewe only had to wait about 20 min, I hear the lines were pretty long all over town though. We went at 3:30, which turned out to be a good time. Sorry to hear about Jonas, hope he gets better soon. Hope David didn't have to stay too terribly late.
emilygraham1 hr and 10 minutes with the kids - we went at 6:20 so they were pretty well-behaved since they were still asleep.
kemplefamI waited about 2 hours; 45 min. of that was with all three kids! Mark was finishing up his voting and then came and got them from me. Crazy!
racheldeanok this makes me not want to move back to BG! We never have to wait at all here. Sounds like a very long day for you and David. So sorry about Jonas. I love you and miss you.
zanneThanks Polly!! He has actually done really well with it for being 20 months old. He lets me put it on his face and breathes when I tell him too. I was expecting a big battle so that has been a relief!!
zanneWhen is Jonas' birthday?
trolleemthanks for asking...they seem to be doing a bit better. passing a cold back and forth for a while. i'm excited to be in danville for thanksgiving. will you guys be going there? hope to see y'all soon!
trolleemi hope jonas feels better!
zanneTrace's is the 17th! He was due the 8th and I said I didn't want a valentine baby but when his due date came and went I would have gladly had him on the 14th! ;-0 I didn't realize they were so close in age!

questions...... 10-27-08 09:00pm EST
When you get older are you going to die? After you die, your never going to come back and be the same again are you? Will I die when I get older? Will your blood not work anymore when you die?

The above are all questions asked by my 4 year old on the 5 minute drive home from church last night. Wow! I am scared to know what kind of questions he is going to ask when he is 5.
cdillman23That is a lot!! At least he is asking, right?
emilygrahamTyler is going thru this right now. He doesn't want to go to heaven because he wants to come back to sleep in his bed. So difficult to explain to him.
trolleemjust wait until 12... :)
trishieCarolyn is doing pretty well. She is doing chemo and that makes her a little sick, but they are fairly sure that the cancer is gone.
gkbakerWow, hard questions.
mrs_poochieso inquisitive
kencancook4ui do .. actually goes well with the chef hat... nice to hear from you
mrs_wormJenna, at almost 2, tonight just could NOT figure out where Joseph was. She kept asking "Where he is??" "Where??". I would tell her "He's in mommy's belly" and point... and she would just look all around my belly and feel of it and ask again "where?" ...

This went on for like 10 minutes.
gkbaker4 nephews, one niece now total. 3 nephews on my husband's side. One niece, and one nephew on my side.

long, good week 10-24-08 10:58pm EST
we had a great meeting this week! One thing I really appreciate about the congregation here is that every member makes such an effort to attend each service. David had to work a lot this week(special thanks to the crazy happenings at WKU this week), so was unable to attend a few nights. I feel like I had a wrestling match with the kids some nights. It is during these nights when you actually realize you were unable to catch very little of the sermon that you remind yourself that while you may be unable to listen to a lot of the sermon, you are setting an example for your children of the importance of attending services.

it has been extremely crazy for me at work this week. considering the current economy, especially for the housing industry, I should count myself lucky.

I missed work today to take Isaac for surgery. Nothing major, just tube removal and patching up the holes. Still, they have to put them to sleep, which as a parent is always slightly nerve racking. Isaac was awesome though. He was so calm and cool, and went right with the people when they took him away to put him under. Special thanks to the nurses at the Medical Center who were super to him. They gave him a goody bag with some little toys when he got there, that really helped. The only down side was that even though he had a braclet listing his allergies, they didn't really understand what all "corn" allergy means. They came to me and said "he is in recovery and drinking gatorade." I think the nurse got a little freaked out when I asked if it had corn syrup in it, because of the corn allergy. anyway all is well, but we are worn out.
mrs_wormGood point about maybe not hearing a full sermon, but setting a good example for our kids.

Glad Isaac's surgery went well and that he was such a trooper!
gkbakerNever thought about the gatorade. Pretty much everything has some sort of corn deriviative in it. Must be hard for you and for him.
kemplefamDo you guys still worship at Parkway? I feel really blessed that none of my kids have any major allergies; I've never known anyone with a corn allergy though.
zanneEverything tends to be scary as a mom if it involves our kids. I'm glad everything went well with Isaac!
mrs_wormJenna was fine...

we talked about it a lot before I put it on her and she really didn't seem to care at all... she actually really likes Caden's pirate costume and it helped that Caden was so excited about both his AND her costume...

then again, Jenna isn't afraid of much of anything!
cheesemasterGlad Isaac's surgery went well, tell Dave I said hi.
mrs_poochieglad Isaac's surgery went well. I didn't even know he was having it, I could have walked up to say hello if I had known you were there.
